Shrine of Remembrance

Shrine of Remembrance - Information

The Shrine of Remembrance, located in Kings Domain on St Kilda Road, Melbourne, is one of the most significant war memorials in Australia. Designed by architects Phillip Hudson and James Wardrop, who were both World War I veterans, the Shrine was built to honor the men and women of Victoria who served in World War I, but now it serves as a memorial to all Australians who have served in war.

The Shrine stands as a symbol of remembrance and sacrifice. Its solemn yet grand architecture, inspired by the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus and the Parthenon in Athens, reflects the gravity and emotion associated with commemorative sites. Visitors can explore the many rooms and exhibits detailing the courageous efforts of soldiers through the decades, including the Crypt, the Galleries of Remembrance, and the Sanctuary where the Ray of Light ceremony occurs every year on November 11th at 11 AM, marking the armistice.

Educational and commemorative programs at the Shrine include guided tours, exhibitions, and remembrance ceremonies, which offer insights into Australia's military history and the impact of wars on society. The Shrine's parkland setting also provides a reflective space for visitors to contemplate peace and sacrifice.
